Hey Folks, at the last Friday's meeting the topic of the Southern Pacific railroad sign came up regarding a possible movement to a different location.
Here's my two cents on thinking about this.
* People like signs - especially old, historical, signs
* As a railroad club we should promote the railroad history of Alameda County
* Railroads that are/were in Alameda County are: Central Pacific, Union Pacific, Santa Fe, Western Pacific, Alameda Belt Line, Oakland Terminal, Key Line, that Berkeley hills line (forget the name). Anyone has a list of all that ever existed? Focus on the major ones.
* We should be able to find a metal shop that can take computer drawings and cut to the shape needed - like the UP shield shape.
* We should spare no expensive in getting the best quality power coating, color match, paint job possible - a sign that will last the next 150 years or more.
Regarding the existing Southern Pacific sign - I recommend that we don't move that. It has some corrosion already and if we move it, we could risk cracking the coating which will cause even more corrosion.
Since we'll need permission to add anything to the exterior, perhaps we should decide what we want, how many, what size. We could even take a picture of the building and photoshop railroad emblems to scale and show that to them.
Just some thoughts,
