<p class="MsoNormal">At what scale can you use real bolts, washers and nuts to assemble a scale model car?</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Here’s one of the first 50’ cars used by the Rock Island. 50’ – 0” inside length. Built in 1898, it was featured in Railway Engineering News, and several drawings survived and are at Lake States Railway Historical Assoc. located in
Baraboo, Wisconsin. The man that saved these drawings worked on the Rock Island in the mechanical engineering department. One day his boss came by and requested all the old, cancelled, drawings get thrown out. Over 22,000 drawings existed, some dating back
to cars built after the Chicago Fire of 1871. So instead of putting them into a burn barrel, he went to the metal shop and had some tubes and caps made up. Every day he took home a couple hundred drawings and stored them in his house. He’s retired off
the C&NW and lives in West Chicago now. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I found a copy of the Engineering News Supplement at the San Francisco Public Library, setup appointment to access and photo-ed the pages.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Some of these cars survived into the 1930’s.</p>
