<br><font color="black" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">A small army of people from both the O and HO scales attacked the club cooling system in the last few weeks to assure the cooling problems we faced last year are not repeated. There were three fronts of this attack: 1. fix the inoperable exhaust fan, 2. replace the crushed swamp cooler on the HO side, and 3. replace the cooling pads of the other seven swamp coolers and check for any problems in them.
<div><br>
</div>
<div><b>Exhaust Fan:</b> In the midst of checking out the exhaust fan, Robert Lopez correctly diagnosed the problem as a faulty ballast. By the time he had descended the ladder, he had ordered new ballasts (one for each of the two fans). He installed them the following Friday---problem solved. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>The importance of the exhaust fans was determined some years ago when an experiment was run. The comfort level was observed by leaving the exhaust fans off while the coolers were on, and then again when the exhaust fans were finally turned on. What was found was the upper volume of the building filled up with hot air without the exhaust fans running. This hot air and hot building radiated warmth to the inhabitants below. When the exhaust fans were turned on, the comfort level was significantly improved.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div><b>New Cooler</b>: Gary Lewis ordered a new cooler to replace the old damaged unit. When he delivered the cooler to the club two Fridays ago, a swarm of volunteers jumped in to assist installing it that night---a job well done.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div><b>Rehab of coolers:</b> Last Saturday Kevin Mahan and I started the process of replacing the scaled cooling pads with new ones. Midway through the job, the Bursleys showed up to help. After the pads were replaced and some float valves replaced, the master switch was thrown and only a couple coolers started. One by one, the problem(s) with each cooler was identified and fixed. Most of the problems were simple: plug it in, reset the gfi. Two of the water pumps were shot and replaced As of yesterday, all eight coolers were working. Hopefully we will have an opportunity before the Fair to test the system with warm weather to assure all the problems are solved.</div>
