[Accrs] Laser Cutters

There are a number of modelers using laser cutters in the area. There are lots of different lasers out there, the ones you have are expensive ($5K+)..There are some lower cost units and some Chinese that are under $1K. Power and SW are the differentiator. 10-20W is cheap over 20-30W starts adding cost. The more powerful the laser the more it can cut in a single pass.

I am not really up to speed, but I understand it may take multiple passes to cut thicker materials (why you get the burn at the edge).

You also may need a cover and extractor fan.

I got this in the email today. I was wondering if anyone has one of these and what are some of the projects you use it for. I have a couple 1890's freight cars and was thinking that all the wrought iron parts would be 3D printed parts and the wood parts could be real wood parts.

But to cut sills, posts, carline, end plates on a table saw might not be precision enough in small scales, but perhaps laser cutting would be more accurate.

However, the issue with laser cutting is the material thickness matching your needed dimension thickness so you only have to make a one pass cut for a finished sill piece.

Any ideas on that?

Tony
