Railroading Heritage of Midwest America is taking ownership of the former Rock Island Shops at Silvis (East Moline) and sounds like they intend to provide a museum of some sorts with the shops.

The Rock Island built this facility in 1903, opened in February 1904. It was state of the art at that time, had it’s own power plant facility, foundry service, engineering offices and mechanical shops for building new steam engines and repair. The previous shops at 47th Chicago were surrounded by residential housing by 1900 so expansion was not an option. This is the period known as the ROCK ISLAND SYSTEM.
These is a lot of documentation on these shops and the practices of CRI&P locomotive management and servicing in the various railroad journals of the time which are available free in Google Books.
If you ever visit this area, this facility, along with other points of interests is the John Deere combine factory in East Moline (free tours), the Rock Island Arsenal museum on the island, the Mississippi River visitor center for the lock and dam control operations are interesting places to see, along with the remnants of the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi, Colonel Davenport’s home, who was of the sponsors/supporters of the Rock Island & La Salle Railroad which became the Chicago and Rock Island.
