Just in case you have used Google maps for searching railroad information,   I have been doing a virtual tour of the Golden State Route.  I’m currently going across Kansas.  I started at the Southeast part of the these and heading to Volland and then to Horton.

When I came across Hutchinson, the former Rock Island depot was not marked.  Just a few blocks away is the former Santa Fe depot which is marked because it’s used by Amtrak.

I noticed there was an option on Google Maps to add a business or place of interest – certainly this depot should be marked so I used the feature – thinking that it will just end up in the Google Blackhole and never to be seen again.   But to my surprise I can an email back on this in short order.  See below.

In case you are not familiar with Kansas railroad history, there are some fascinating stories.   In the case of the Rock Island,  they way they achieved trackage in Kansas was to have one of their lawyers start a new company,  called Chicago, Kansas & Nebraska Ry.  The company was able to successfully get New York investments into the company that money was used to build as fast and far as they could.

The Rock Island held most of the stock of the company.  So after the CK&N spent all the investors money and declared bankruptcy,  the Rock Island was able to take over the company.  This significantly expanded the Rock Island and it was during this period the railroad was marketed as The Great Rock Island Route and a famous song was written and published to promote the route.   This song you know and have hear I’m sure – well, maybe not the original, but the Wabash Cannonball song which you probably have heard is based upon the Rock Island song by J. A.. Roth .   There is a rendition of the original The Great Rock Island Route song on YouTube.

Just in case you see some railroad place of interest on Google Maps and it’s not listed – there is an option to add it.
