FYI, the Gold Spike 150 ceremony was on May 10, 2018 at promontory UT. 

The site lays out an interesting trip to see the area and eh gold spike. http://nnry.com/pages/golden-spike.php

It is an interesting trip, but Elko is 7.5 hours and 511 miles.  Perhaps take Amtrak to Elko and then rent a car.....
