[Accrs] Proto 2000 units conversion

Hi Gary, I haven't tried gluing these before so if that works well that will be amazing. I've used Goo on auto interior and external trim repairs - works. I purchase packages of the plastic gears from Athearn many years ago. Mostly for use with SD40-2/GP38--2 and replacements for Proto 2000 GP's. I noticed that Walther's was selling E unit new replacement wheelsets for the E unit models - I would like to replace the complete trucks for the E6, E7, E8 due to that funky bearing box that falls off easily.

I'm trying a simple fix for the PA's, but I don't know how long it will work. After pulling the wheels and gear apart, flush the cracked axle gears and wheels with acetone. Brake parts cleaner in an aerosol can works well for this since it's mostly acetone. When dry, with a tooth pick or pin, work some Walthers Goo into each end of the gear and apply some to the end of the mating axles. Insert them in the gear and adjust the spacing using wheel gauge. Twist the wheels while doing this. You may actually force some Goo out the cracks when you press the wheels closer together. You will also have a ring of Goo between the end of the gear and the inside wheel face. Leave it alone. Let them set overnight. At this point, I don't know how long they will last but I'm doing this to most of the A-B-A set I ran during the fair, because most of them are cracked. So, these are my test units. Try it. If it doesn't work, go buy the new Walthers re-runs of these, hopefully with better gears.

Gary

Proto 2000 units. The one problem I have found with the Proto locos,
is their axle gear tends to crack. It can be replaced with a gear from Athearn as you can't get the Proto gears.

Mark W. has a Proto 2000 unit that I have replaced all the axle gears
for him. It is converted to DCC and does run nice. Seems like I
replaced some of mine too. Just can't remember as I don't use those
units very often (GP20, GP30).

If you have a PA from them, you are out of luck as they use a different axle gear that no one else makes. Bummer.

Dean
