Southern Pacific depot to be relocated, renovated as new commuter station
June 21, 2016
LIVERMORE, Calif. — Not only will a Southern Pacific depot be refurbished beginning later this year, but it will also serve passengers once again. The Livermore Planning Commission has given the final approval for the relocation and refurbishment of the historic depot.
Planners say the depot will be relocated to the city’s transportation center adjacent to railroad tracks where it will be returned to service as Livermore’s depot for Altamont Corridor Express commuter rail trains and local buses. The project is being funded through Federal Surface Transportation dollars via a metropolitan livable communities grant. The city of Livermore will manage the project.
The Central Pacific Railroad built the depot in 1892 where it was used by Southern Pacific-operated passenger trains until 1941 and freight until 1971.
