I agree that what he (and his wife) did was stupid.
However, I wouldn't categorize them as railfans. There's sort of an underground group of train riders, who are somewhat young in their age. I've run into them occasionally near railroad yards, because they ask railfans (like me) about trains that come and go, curious about their destinations.
Some may recall a rider who was caught riding inside a cab of a locomotive in Tehachapi few years ago, complete with a friend in a car chasing him to the destination. Not a railfan. I saw a young couple riding a boxcar at Rocklin, and their dangling feet triggered the high/wide detector before the flyover bridge, so the crew stopped the train to check, and they got off and "escaped." Not railfans.
A guy fell in a coal hopper and got buried in coal and died not too long ago. Not a railfan.

Sounds like a rail fan...and a pretty stupid
one at that. Riding equipment like this fool was doing is
dangerous....to say the least. It's one thing to take
pictures but to try and hop on moving equipment or ride cars
that are not designed to be ridden is insane.
