Depending on where you buy pre-fab burgers, they may be more than $4 per pound.  At Costco, the 1/3 pound patties are $4 per pound (10 pounds for $40, 6# are $4.67/#):

I went back and looked and the Safeway ad I had expires today, probably too early to buy it anyway. Let's see what is in the next set of ads. If we want to do burgers, it is probably worth a trip to the business Costco as we will need about 30-40 burgers.

Safeway has tri-tip on sale for $3.88 a pound this week.  That is a bout as cheap as I have seen it. Last year we did 3 (or 4 tri-tips) and chicken thighs (good BBQ).  Do we want to do that again?  I can get the meat next Tuesday and marinate for the event. I am getting better but may need some help with the BBQ.
