Jim,
Yesterday I was running a 60 car train with a caboose. Same set-up.
4 units on the point and 2 more 35 cars back in the consist. The
mid-train helpers were spliced (one on each end) by one of the Santa Fe
RCE units they made from retired B-units. Looked good and ran fine.
It took 20 minutes to completely make a circuit at about 35 miles per
hour. Sound on the point and sound with the helpers.

On Friday I put together my Kaiser Fontana coal train. 50 cars, all
now weathered.

Four Santa Fe 'gators on the head end (RSD15's) and two more cut in 35
cars back in the train. All units were powered.

I put them all in the same consist. Ran at drag speed and made 2 or 3
complete circuits before it was time to leave. I had run a couple of
circuits with 5 on the head-end before trying the mid train helpers.
Wanted to see if any of the cars would cause a problem first.

Something different and it worked without a problem.
