Dean and I did a thinning and relocation of club cars this afternoon. Some of the thinning of cars on the hidden yard went into the storage drawers and others went to the freight yard and co-op grain silo. Club cars are now on tracks 1-3 and Dean set-up his trailer-train on track 4. Tracks 5 through 9 are open for member trains to be staged for the shoot. Cars removed from the layout other than the hidden yard are on a cart in the aisle by the passenger station. A number of these cars need to go back on the layout, BUT we need to answer one basic question first. How accurate do we want to be as to era integrity? That is, besides the primary train being realistic, do we want the trains it meets and cars at industries to be the same era as the primary train or are we willing to mix steam, modern and anything in between. This is critical both to what members set-up and what of the cars we removed we put back.
That said, anything Dean and I did can be changed relatively easily tomorrow night or Saturday before the shoot. My assumption is that we want each industry and train to have era integrity, but not the overall operation, but like I said, we can change the industries fairly easily if the majority wants a single era. So the specific things we did were:
1- thinned and repositioned cars in the hidden yard as noted above
2- thinned the ice reefers to remove the "billboard" cars. Right now there are only four cars at the icing dock so we could use some actual road name reefers added to that track.
3- set-up a train of club cars in the freight yard (without power - but preferably headed out through the bypass instead of block 34 because I would be amazed if it ran well if used as a staged train) leaving three freight yard tracks available for member train set-up.
4- Removed the steam engine in Jamestown but left the Sierra Western MOW car. We may want to add other cars at industries once we decide era issue.
5- Thinned the cars at the oil loading dock at Sierra Refining and positioned the cars on eht front side at the actual loading positions. The era integrity is not perfect but reasonable and the car marked for vegetable oil is now gone.
6- Moved the wrapped lumber loads from the pulp mill to the sawmill. Thinned the trucks at Weyerhauser (to remove the competitor truck from their loading dock) and Acme Plastics (to remove the post office and food industry trucks and match their loading doors). There are still a couple of trucks that could go in the common area between the industries.
7- Added grain hoppers to the sidings at the co-op grain elevator. ER integrity question. Covered hoppers haven't changed much so the body types are OK. The road names are all mid 70"s vintage but compatible. If this is critical we can use the Sierra Western cars that are in hidden and have a less than full industry.
8-Removed the stock cars from the loading dock at the from of the port area and replaced them with a Burlington Northern (1968 to 2000 something vintage) boxcar with open doors and a lumber load. I put one of my airplane cars on a siding in the port area and would like to add the second and the Boeing Car and an engine but that blocks a switch which would be needed if the primary train runs into the port area and the engine is BNSF which could have era issues we decide to be era specific.
9- We removed ALL equipment from the passenger yard and and station and roundhouse area. Most was heavyweight equipment and steam engines with a couple of different era Amtrak. The heavyweight equipment just needs to be thinned so it doesn't look cluttered if we don't mind the loss of era integrity or we could leave the area open for just streamlined equipment. There is currently no club equipment on any track in the station, and I don't recall seeing the ACE train anywhere.

We also need to evaluate cars on sidings and whatever may show in the hidden and freight yards. Only cars that are appropriate for the industry should be on any siding, and they should be the best looking of that car type that we have. A number of cars on the layout look a bit ragged. If the camera is going through the hidden and freight yards, the cars on the adjacent tracks should be in reasonable era specific trains, not the hodge podge that usually exists there.

I would use club cars to run a modern-era manifest as I always do. I think most of them are worthy enough to be in the photo shoot. But I also I have my UP Passenger train that I ca put together as well if club cars are really not going to be used. We can also showcase switching operations in the video shoot too (maybe towards the end) as well as mainline trains.

Did any of you read Andy's post below. The shoot is to show the bestof our club. If I understand the shoot, the process would be to takeONE train around the layout and narrate as it goes along. For eachspot chosen on the layout, there will be camera set-up, time runningthe train chosen to film and this my take several takes. There willnot be a whole lot of everyone running a train as it will take time forthe filming of each train or trains selected. We are attempting to show off the best of the club. The number oftrains needed may not be all that many.

Hello all
Thank you for all that showed up Friday andSaturday to cleanthe layout in preparation for the photo shoot with TSG Multimedia. Regrettably I was not able to show either day due to work and gettingready for a business trip that I will be on all next week, coming homeon Saturday (the day of the photo shoot).
Just a reminder, this is a photo shoot thathas the very realpotential to be seen world wide! Who ever is showing up that Saturdayto help with this great endeavor please bring your best running ANDbestappearing equipment. We need to make our club look good, no missinghand rails, lights working, appropriate paint and so on. The operatingrules will be in affect, run prototypically. By prototypically I meanrun scale appropriate speeds, appropriate equipment and so on. I havelearned that when I am taking video of my trains, sometimes what looksgood to the eye turns out to be warp speed on film. To quote SpaceBalls "They've gone plad!" So please no "plad" trains. Whatever yourpower is, run equipment behind it that is appropriate for that era. There are guide lines as far as era is concerned in the operating rulesthat have been voted in.
Follow the photographers' instructions, Iam sure most of ushave seen their videos before, they are good at what they do. Assumethat when they are there it is not going to be a free run. Oddsaretrains will be staged and run on cues for the sake of the video, inother words held off camera and on the given cue run it through theshot, but above all listen to instruction, the shots are planned, ourtrains are now actors. The videos I have seen, follow one train aroundthe layout with a few meets thrown in. That one train NEEDS to runwell with ideally no issues.
Who ever is showing Saturday for the shoot,I have herd thatthe shoot is starting at 10. Please show up at 9 if you can to set upand clean track. If you have a track cleaner in your train make sureit is in good working order, looks respectable, AND is eraappropriate! Remember we are trying to replicate the real world.
