If we want more accurate freight cars based upon real cars and real road names I listed some of the very best available.


Atlas Master – these are generally very accurate cars with accurate road names.

Athearn Genesis – very accurate cars and accurate road names.

Athearn RTR – some very good cars that could be in the Genesis line, are not because they lack air hoses and coupler cut bars and underframe details.

Broadway Limited – accurate freight cars real road names,  passenger cars are some of the very best accurate and fully painted and lettered/numbered.

ExactRail – based upon real cars and real road names.  Some of the best models available.

Tangent Scale Models – based upon real cars, very accurate and real road names.

Rapido Trains – upon real cars,  accurate and real road names  - early passenger cars had quality problems, but recent items have been very good.

Moloco Trains – very accurate cars based upon the real thing.

Spring Mills Depot – very accurate cars and road names.

Wheels of Time – recently released very accurate cars of Southern Pacific lumber cars.

Southern Pacific Historical Society – has a couple very accurate Southern Pacific cars.

Fox Valley Models – very accurate cars based on real things.

Walthers Proto – accurate cars and road names.  Their passenger cars do not come fully lettered and I prefer to avoid them because of this.

Kadee – most accurate PS1 and PS2 cars, but most are pre 1972

Intermountain – accurate cars, but sometimes incorrect letterings.
